About GlobalGirl Training Academy 2011
The 2nd GGM SA Academy is taking place in July 2011 at the Rosa Parks Library in Soweto, South Africa.
GlobalGirl Media received a PEPFAR (The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) grant to work with 10 HIV-positive young women in Johannesburg, ages 16-25 from June 25-July 16.
In addition to journalistic, camera and sound skills, 10 HIV-positive girls will receive intensive training “MOJO” mobile journalism training.
“I am very excited about this year’s training, as we will be able to give hope to girls who feel their lives are worth nothing,” explains GlobalGirl Media South Africa Programme Director Tumi Mosadi. “Through journalistic and digital media training, we hope to empower our reporters to minimize the stigma that has spread across South Africa about HIV/AIDS.”
Allissa Richardson, Professor of Journalism at Morgan State University and founder of the MOJO lab, will be leading the journalism and digital media training.
About GlobalGirl Training Academy 2010
KICK IT UP! trains high-school-age girls in South Africa and Los Angeles to become participant digital video journalists for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The project links under-served girls with seasoned broadcasters and journalists, providing training and hands-on experience in story development and composition, HD digital video camera and sound technologies, editing, and on-air media training at GlobalGirl Academies based in Soweto, and in Los Angeles, California. Through the establishment of subsequent GlobalGirl News Bureaus, qualified graduates of the first GlobalGirl Academies will become GlobalGirl Reporters, who will develop and produce video content for distribution via cell phone, internet, and digital technology during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Spearheaded by our celebrity spokesperson and mentor, Julie Foudy – former U.S. Women’s Soccer Captain and two-time Gold Medalist, and now a senior ESPN sportscaster – who will be covering the 2010 World Cup,as well as helping the GlobalGirl Media participants write, produce and file their stories. We will impart technical, critical thinking and leadership skills necessary for participants to become outstanding GlobalGirl Reporters, while at the same time empowering each girl to help improve their own situation.
The GlobalGirl Academy curriculum has been developed in partnership with GLOBAL PRESS INSTITUTE, a four-year-old international NGO that uses journalism as a development tool in order to create strong, professional female reporters that can increase access to critical global issues from a female perspective.
KICK IT UP! enhances girls’ capabilities, opportunities, and choices by putting resources (cameras) into girls’ hands, so that they can tell the planet about themselves, their world, and their relationship to sport.
